What is Radon?
Radon is a natural radioactive gas formed from Uranium decay in soil and rock. It is invisible, odourless, and tasteless, detectable only with special equipment. Though low risk outdoors, it can build up indoors, posing a serious lung cancer risk—second only to smoking. Professional mitigation systems can effectively reduce Radon levels, protecting your home and health.
How is Radon Mitigation Performed?
Radon removal (mitigation) in Canada typically involves installing an Active Soil Depressurization System (ASDS), also known as a Sub-Slab Depressurization System. Here's how it works:
Installation: First, we assess the home and determine possible sites for the mitigation system. Next, we analyze how radon gas may enter the home and evaluate the need for any necessary repairs. Once these steps are complete, we core a hole through the concrete slab (or utilize the rough-in from the builder) at the chosen site and insert a pipe into the soil or gravel beneath the foundation.
Suction: A special radon fan is connected to the pipe, creating a suction that draws radon gas from beneath the foundation. It is important to select the right size of fan to ensure effective radon removal.
Venting: The Radon-laden air is then vented outdoors, safely away from your home.
This process effectively reduces radon levels by preventing the gas from entering your living space.
Mitigation costs
When it comes to getting Radon out, there are a few things to consider.
1 - Do you have a Radon rough-in?
If your home was built after Nov 1, 2015, it should have a rough-in similar to the one in the picture. Our team will test the rough-in to make sure it is effective, and install the system there. Rough-ins will help you save some up-front costs. Reach out for a quote today!
2 - Is your basement finished?
An open basement allows for more flexibility with the system design and placement, which will help with its effectiveness, as well as sometimes having the job done quicker. Reach out for a quote today!
3 - House age, size, and layout.
The complexity of the installation makes a big difference, where a larger or more complex home layout may require multiple suction points, and an older home may need more extensive foundation sealing to be effective. Those are just some examples. Reach out for a quote today!
